Conrad and Ford wrote this together in 1901 and both subsequently tried to distance themselves from it. Ford said Conrad did most of it. Conrad implied Ford did. The novel is about the replacement of humanity by a cold, more efficient species that has no use for sentiment.

Given what they both said about it afterwards, the collaboration may have proved the thesis.
