Conrad called this a “simple tale” in the subtitle. It is the least simple tale I have ever read. A bomb. A bureaucrat. A wife. A brother who should never have been involved. The novel dismantles every assumption you bring to it about who is responsible for anything.

I found it almost unbearably sad by the end.
