The Shadow over Innsmouth StoriesTyped Classic Novel Kindle Cover

Spent the week in a town with buses running to it.

That’s the detail I keep returning to with The Shadow over Innsmouth — Lovecraft doesn’t send anyone to the edge of the map this time. He puts the impossible on a public transport route. You can buy a ticket. You can get off and walk around. Most horror needs distance to survive; this one gets stranger the closer it lets you get.

The trick is that Lovecraft explains everything. Every question the narrator asks gets answered. And somehow the answers don’t shrink the horror — they enlarge it. Once you understand what’s actually happening in Innsmouth, walking away from it stops being enough.

Turns out the book had a rough time of its own getting into the world. It was the only one of his novels he ever held as an actual printed book in his lifetime — four hundred copies, half of them destroyed before anyone read them, riddled with printing errors so bad the correction slip needed its own corrections. Two hundred copies of the thing he’d waited his whole life to hold.

There’s something worth sitting with in that too.

Full introduction, two essays, and the rest of it are up on Kindle now. Novel typed live, one keystroke at a time, on YouTube.
